A tried and true well-worn path that many travelers have taken…
Creating a writing habit has been difficult to say the least…
James Clear, author of Atomic Habits, is the modern guru on habit forming. He has a few suggestions, which I’ve so far ignored on how to form a new habit. He summarizes five steps below:
Start with an incredibly small habit
Increase your habit in very small ways
As you build up, break habits into chunks
When you slip, get back on track quickly
Be patient. Stick to a pace you can sustain
So I’m going to try something different this month and see how it goes… I will be writing something, anything, every day for my trip to Nepal. I will be confined to writing on my phone from here, and some days the discussion may just be how I’m feeling, how far I’ve walked, or my bowel movements for the day (kidding, maybe) but I’ll be journaling each day of the trip in the hopes of forming a habit.
When that fails I’ll need to start back over quickly and try again.
Today I fly from New York to New Delhi to start the Nepal leg of my journey. It will have been an interesting week when all is said and done…
